The Oldest European Theatre History
The town of Hvar, located on the island of the same name — the longest in the Adriatic Sea at 68.2 kilometers — is a true treasure trove of Mediterranean beauty, with a rich history dating back to ancient times when the Greeks called it Pharos. The Hvar Theater is the first municipal theater in Europe. It is located in the eastern half of the Arsenal building and was opened in 1612. The Hvar Theater has not preserved its original interior due to later reconstructions. . The Public Theatre in Hvar holds the extraordinary distinction of being Europe's oldest public theatre, established in 1612 during Venetian rule. Built within the Arsenal building on the main town square, this groundbreaking cultural institution was commissioned by Venetian Prince Petar Semitekolo and represented a revolutionary concept for its time - a theatre accessible to all social classes, from fishermen and craftsmen to nobility and educated elite, which was virtually unheard of in 17th century Europe.
After nearly two decades of meticulous renovation, the theatre was solemnly reopened on May 1, 2019, with a series of performances that marked its return as a vibrant cultural hub. Today it functions as a multipurpose venue hosting not only theatrical productions but also fashion shows, traditional dances, and various cultural events. The interior preserves original frescoes from 1819, marble and wooden stage elements, and parts of the original auditorium, while visitors can admire authentic period costumes from the earliest performances alongside memorabilia including stucco work, paintings, and sculptures used as stage backdrops. Open to visitors during daytime hours, this remarkable theatre stands as an indispensable part of Hvar's cultural heritage and a testament to the island's progressive artistic traditions.
